The boy is back

Starting with hit singles “This Town” and “Slow Hands,” ex-One Direction member Niall Horan is back and better than ever with his new album, Flicker. Often considered the heart of One Direction, Horan’s first solo album radiates the same charm and easygoing nature as his personality. With a sound influenced by Fleetwood Mac and songs co-written by Adele associate Tobias Jesso Jr., Flicker is a solid first album for the Irish singer/songwriter.
Horan’s vocals and guitar take center stage, giving the album its soothing West Coast sound. Tracks such as “On the Loose” and “Since We’re Alone” are more upbeat tracks, each with a soft beat that captivates listeners. His lyrics aren’t to be trifled with; they are romantic, real and heartbreaking.
On his more intimate tracks, such as “Too Much to Ask,” Horan and his piano tug at the heartstrings, accompanied with lyrics that will strike a chord, even for those who haven’t experienced heartbreak. Singing “And oh, love, do you feel this rough?/Why’s it only you I’m thinking of/My shadow’s dancing/Without you for the first time” with his calming vocals, Horan plays into the theme of lost love, also found on the album’s title track, “Flicker.”
Purely acoustic, genuine and promising, Flicker proves to be a solid album and start for Niall Horan’s solo career. It strays away from a more digital sound and allows for Horan’s vocals and instrumental talents to shine through. His lyrics are honest and consoling, reflecting his songwriting prowess. Regardless of where you stood during the height of One Direction’s global reign, Horan’s album is sure to please fans of every genre.
