With a fall breeze in the air, the field hockey team won 1–0  against Kent Place on Oct. 11, securing its fifth win of the season.

The game began as Westfield charged down the field toward Kent Place’s goal. After Kent Place took control, it headed through Westfield’s defensive line. Its shots were promptly blocked by Westfield goalie and senior Quad-Captain Deanna Cohen.

As the game progressed, Westfield senior Quad-Captain Cassie Masciale proved a valuable defensive player, protecting the goal from many shots.

Said Masciale, “We recognized that we could beat Kent Place who has been a very good competitor in the past, so we picked up the intensity.”

After a scoreless first half, Kent Place immediately attacked WHS’ goal.

Following a high-sticking foul by Kent Place, Westfield kept the ball near Kent Place’s goal.

Shooting off a corner pass from sophomore Valeria Bouchoueva, senior Quad–Captain Halsey Urban scored the first goal of the game, and her fifth this season.

Although Westfield’s offense had been struggling this season, according to Head Coach Caitlin MacDonald, “Our midfielders were able to set up some offensive opportunities while also making some nice defensive plays and clears.”

She added, “We have been working hard to create more offensive opportunities by executing corners and finishing.”

Late in the game, Cohen made key saves to maintain WHS’ lead, while Westfield’s defense skillfully thwarted offensive attempts.

With commendable efforts on both sides, the game ended with a score of 1–0. According to MacDonald, this win helped the team’s position in the county tournament.

Masciale added that as the season progresses the captains hope to improve field communication.

“We have a lot of talented players who can really make an impact,” she said.
