Olympic athletes to watch

With the Winter Olympics approaching, fans are excited to see the pros hit the slopes and ice. Here are a few of the American athletes who are expected to make a big statement this year in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Shaun White: Snowboarding
White has become one of the best-known winter-sport athletes in the world. The 31-year-old has earned two Olympic gold medals, one at Turin, Italy, in 2006 and one at Vancouver, Canada, in 2010. White is seeking redemption after disappointing performances at Sochi, Russia, in 2014. Despite being the favorite to win the halfpipe in 2014, White ended up finishing fourth. To win this year, he will have to take down some of his biggest rivals, including Scotty James of Australia and Iouri Podladtchikov of Switzerland.

Chloe Kim: Snowboarding
There are high expectations for this 17-year-old Korean-American athlete this year. At the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, Kim won both the halfpipe and the slopestyle. She has also won several X Games gold medals and World Snowboard Tour titles. After being too young to compete in Sochi, Kim can finally demonstrate her talent at the highest international level. She will face the most competition from teammates Maddie Mastro and Kelly Clark as Team USA dominates the field in the halfpipe.

Lindsey Vonn: Alpine Skiing
Known as the “Speed Queen,” Lindsey Vonn is expected to succeed this year. She won the gold medal at Vancouver in downhill skiing, making her the first American woman to win the event. A knee injury kept Vonn from competing in Sochi, so she is looking to reclaim her title. As one of the favorites to win this year, the 33-year-old would be the oldest woman to place in the Olympic Alpine. The toughest competition Vonn will face will be from Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein and Sofia Goggia of Italy.
