Athletes sign on

by Danny Kuhn

Some of WHS’ most distinguished athletes made the official pledge to join a college sports team on National Signing Day yesterday. Hi’s Eye has chosen to highlight three of the athletes who committed to a college on National Signing Day.

Only a select group of athletes in WHS were recruited for Division I schools. These athletes will have a chance to showcase their skills for highly competitive teams having received scholarship offers to attend top-level schools.

Senior Alexis Kardias committed to the University of Southern California for women’s lacrosse.

Kardias said: “The recruiting process requires a lot of hard work and effort. It’s not something that just happens because you’re a good athlete. If you want to play at the D1, level you have to dedicate yourself the process and make it your number one priority.”

Senior Joe Ohaus committed to Georgetown University, the NCAA national finalist last year for men’s soccer. Ohaus also agreed that the process was strenuous, but was worth it in the end.

He said, “The recruiting process for me was just about reaching out to the schools I was interested in early last year, and then I just had to wait for them to get a chance to see me play in games and to come to practices.”

Senior Caroline Baldwin will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a scholarship for women’s swimming.

Baldwin said: “I had a set group of five coaches I talked to junior year, but [that] summer, I narrowed it down to three schools and set up my official visits.”

Baldwin added, “Achieving my dream makes me realize that all my hard work has paid off and all the time I’ve put into swimming was worth it, but I don’t want to stop here. I hope to take my swimming career to new heights once I enter UNC next fall.”
