Concerts bring cheer
The WHS music department is in full preparation for its winter concerts. The WHS Orchestra Concert is on Dec. 14 and the Holiday Concert is on Dec. 22; both begin at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium.
The Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra will play music by Elgar, Williams, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, Dvorak and Gershwin.
Sophomore Francis Wong said, “This year we are playing a rather challenging piece with the Wind Ensemble called ‘Die Fledermaus’ by Johann Strauss and I am very excited to perform it next week.”
The Holiday Concert features Mixed Chorus, Bella Cora, Concert Choir, Chorale and Choraleers. This year there will be a special performance by the Concert Choir accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra. Together, the groups will perform two songs: Rutter’s “Gloria” and Beethoven’s “Hallelujah.”
Senior Concert Choir President Annie Oldakowski said: “The music is very difficult so making sure all the notes and rhythms are right while following conductor [Mr. Raymond Wojcik] will be interesting. We’re performing a lot of pieces with the orchestra so it should be a very entertaining night.”
“We have all of the songs that are done every year,” said senior Hannah Margolin. “The alumni join us at the end, which is really exciting. Chorus is a very close-knit group, and it’s great to see all of our friends who’ve graduated.”
According to WHS graduate Kylie Bangs, “It is going to be hard watching everyone and not being able to really be a part of [the concert] anymore but I’m really looking forward to finally listening and watching the whole [concert].”
Said Oldakowski, “Traditions are very important to the choir department.”
