Halloween and the Monday Blues

My dislike for Mondays is far from unusual. I am a member of the majority who hits the snooze button a few extra times when it comes to waking up on the first day of the school week.

Although I’ve never been enthusiastic about Mondays, we have reluctantly managed to coexist. That is, until “that day” decided to ruin the best of all holidays: Halloween.
For the younger set, the fact that Halloween is on a Monday is a mere technicality. In fact, it just means a whole school day will be devoted to fall fun. But in the life of a first-semester senior, Halloween on a Monday is a relative tragedy.
Judging by the amount of homework I am assigned on Halloween, it appears that teachers have forgotten that I would like to celebrate as well. I bet they’ll be enjoying themselves at a fabulous costume party as I labor over sine graphs and verb conjugations.
Instead of donning the meticulously crafted costume I had worked on for months, I will be forced to sit alone in my room scrambling to finish my reading for English.
I’ll be too depressed about all the fun I’m missing to even bring myself to greet the eager trick-or-treaters at my doorstep.
I’ll have to leave a bucket of candy outside and let them fight it out themselves. Unfortunately, I’ll be handing out a different kind of treat: application fees through the Common Application.
So for all of you who manage to get out to partake in spooky fun, think of me fondly as I sit at my computer, wearing a witch’s hat and lamenting my lost youth.
If you’re feeling particularly generous, stop by Room 111 to share some of your hard-earned loot with the Hi’s Eye staff, as we are hunched over our computers making sure our columns are aligned.
