Star Wars arrives once again: Evolution of a galaxy far away

When George Lucas’s Star Wars was set to hit the big screen in 1977, there was hardly an expectation of success. With an outlandish science-fiction plot, relatively unknown actors, experimental special effects and a low budget, Star Wars appeared to be nothing more than a young director’s dream project.

Nine films, three trilogies and 40 years later, Star Wars is one of the most beloved franchises in cinema and popular culture. With the arrival of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it is appropriate to reflect on how Star Wars has changed since its inception.
The original trilogy tells the classic tale of good vs. evil in an epic, space opera setting. Viewers were treated to an exciting story with a unique and creative plot, memorable characters and a certain “I am your father” line that shook the world of cinema.
The prequel trilogy that brought Episodes 1-3 from 1999-2005 did not sit well with fans due to an overload of special effects, dry dialogue and complicated plot points. So, when Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012 and announced that a sequel trilogy would be produced, fans worried.
But 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens silenced the doubters. It revived the magic and excitement that had been absent since the original trilogy. The film appeased diehard fans and engaged Star Wars newcomers. In addition to returning the franchise to its rightful glory, the film offered social commentary by featuring a female lead and an African-American supporting role.
Disney also began to experiment with “anthology” films, beginning with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016. These movies stray from the main storyline of the Star Wars universe, and Rogue One’s success brings high anticipation for an upcoming Han Solo anthology film in 2018, and a third anthology film planned for release in 2020.
Overall, Star Wars has changed for the better since its arrival onto the big screen. What started as one man’s idea has become an international franchise. The worldwide popularity of Star Wars has created a diverse fan base. It is a captivating tale that can appeal to people varying in age, gender and ethnicity. Star Wars is back, and it is for everyone.
