Can’t miss movies: Summer 2022
As the school year winds down, there are plenty of movies to look forward to as summer approaches. Here are five must-sees in the theaters from May to August:
1. Men
Men stars Jessie Buckley, Rory Kinnear, and Gayle Rankin in a 1 hour and 40 minute horror film set to release on May 20. Following a personal tragedy, main character Harper (Buckley) seeks solace in an isolated retreat to the countryside. However, it quickly becomes evident that someone or something in the surrounding wooded area is following her. Her deepest fears soon become a reality.
2. Top Gun: Maverick
After two years of delays due to COVID-19, the sequel to blockbuster film Top Gun is finally in theaters beginning May 27. Top Gun: Maverick follows Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell who has been put in charge of a top gun pilot graduate class to prepare them for future missions. Tom Cruise reprises his role as Maverick starring alongside Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly.
3. Lightyear
Starring the voices of Chris Evans, Keke Palmer and James Brolin, Lightyear is an animated action-packed film depicting the intergalactic adventures of Buzz Lightyear and robot cat companion, Sox, as a prequel to the beloved Toy Story film. The Disney+ Pixar movie is set to release on June 17.
4. Thor: Love and Thunder
Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor in the fourth rendition of the movie series. The film follows the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, where Thor has to balance his mental state of mind as well as Gorr, the God Butcher, from killing him and the rest of the Asgardians. Hemsworth stars alongside Galaxy of the Guardians cast member Chris Pratt, as well as Christian Bale and Natalie Portman. The newest Marvel Cinematic Universe film will be in theaters beginning July 8.
5. Nope
Academy-Award winning director Jordan Peele presents Nope on July 22. The horror film stars Keke Palmer, Daniel Kaluuya and Steven Yeun and will run for two hours. Peele has sought to retain a sense of mystery surrounding the film prior to its release date, however the official trailer shows California ranchers discovering a strange force of nature that affects both human and animal behavior.
