Since its release in November 2022, ChatGPT has been a debated issue not only at WHS, but schools across the country. With a few clicks of a button, ChatGPT can generate a polished, five-paragraph essay in a matter of seconds that would have taken even the best of students several days to draft.
As ChatGPT has made cheating easier than ever, it is no surprise that teachers took a strong stance against it. However, the assumption that students are only interested in this technology for the purpose of cheating is an unfair assessment that has made the topic of AI taboo at WHS.
Instead of villainizing ChatGPT for being misused by a few lazy students, teachers should consider the technology’s countless benefits. For the first time, AI can be used to help students prepare for a test by asking questions and generating a study guide on a specific topic. With some students paying thousands of dollars per year for a tutor, this is a cheaper alternative that offers on-demand support for any given subject area.
In fact, some of the most well-known educational companies have embraced and promoted the use of AI. According to builtin.com, study platforms such as Duolingo, Quizlet and Khan Academy have begun offering a virtual AI tutor. Like ChatGPT, a student can enter a question and the technology will respond with a step-by-step explanation within seconds.
However, the cynicism over AI is also justified. It can be used to generate fake photos and videos, which can be extremely harmful if used maliciously. During a time of unrest in the Middle East, fake images can be used to manipulate public opinion and spread fake news. As AI is continuously improving, it has become much harder to determine the difference between what is real and what is not. Since it can be used by anyone, including those wishing to defame others, there is no telling the damage this feature can have on the lives of others.
Whether we like it or not, AI is the future. That being said, it is important to know how to use it responsibly. Despite the countless benefits it offers society, it has the potential to create serious problems.
Moving forward, it is imperative that teachers and students alike navigate these recent advancements and place an emphasis on using it strictly for the betterment of society rather than just spending time accusing us of cheating on assignments and essays. It is time we start having more serious conversations about AI at our school.
