A long time ago in a place far away // Lived a special kingdom here to stay. // All the animals lived in harmony // Until the Donkeys and Elephants created a hegemony. // Elephants and Donkeys had different beliefs, // Both deeming their opinions to be chief. // They thought a compromise could be achieved // But this proved harder than they once believed. // As time went on things began to change // The content of their debates became deranged. // Their opinions became too extreme // Neither of the animals were willing to play for the same team. // The years dragged on as they both fought for power // Spewing insults at each other, often for hours. // Spreading lies and misinformation became the norm // Always hoping the other would conform. // Once the tensions grew to a degree // A peculiar thing came to be. // The Donkey’s “hee hawed” while the Elephants rumbled // Roaring two different languages while the kingdom crumbled. // “Why do the Elephants not understand our choices?” // Never realizing the two were making completely different noises…
How did this story come to be, you may ask? The truth is, as the Donkeys and the Elephants fought, neither of them stopped to take the time to listen to each other. Their ears were too blocked with their
own righteous opinions to ever realize they were not understanding each other.
The two animals disagreed on almost every issue. For example, Elephants believed that Donkeys who couldn’t afford the rent of the land they roamed shouldn’t be allowed on it. Donkeys believed that Elephants should not have the right to bear their tusks in self-defense because of their potential danger to other animals.
Neither side was willing to compromise, even an inch, causing the issues to reach a deadlock as the disputes were prolonged.
The Donkeys and the Elephants struggled to co-exist, both believing the right to rule the kingdom was theirs. When a donkey was in power, the Elephants could not accept it, and when an elephant held power, the Donkeys would pray for their downfall.
The other animals watched helplessly as their kingdom, that was once well-respected, turned into a laughingstock.
The Donkeys and Elephants fought to insanity, and the other animals were treated as an afterthought. So stuck in the extremity of their polar opposite opinions, the two animals would never think to listen to advice from anyone else.
The Donkeys say “that is them, this is us” //A kingdom built on unity, turning to dust // The Donkeys and Elephants must reverse the damage // They must go back to speaking the same language // If they start seeking understanding where they can // unity will be restored in the land.
