The constant dropping and buying of new water bottles is getting old. There is no excuse for someone to stow away a perfect water bottle solely based on what the trend is right now. Due to the immense media presence of water bottles on TikTok and influencers constantly pushing for their new favorite water bottle (many of which probably sponsor their videos), many high school students have a constant cycle of buying new water bottles.
This hobby of getting a new water bottle has taken over many people’s lives due to the constant need to fit in. The first popular water bottle of our time was the S’well water bottle, priced at $35. It was the staple for keeping your drinks warm or cold as needed. However, when the next water bottle brand became popular, HydroFlask, many people put down their S’well and picked up the Hydro.
The Hydroflask, $44, had a fresh and new look that drew many customers in. This water bottle became popular in 2019 during the start of many TikTok trends, such as being a VSCO girl; people dressing in oversized shirts with scrunchies on their wrist, accompanied by the infamous Hydro Flask. This era consisted of decorating your new Hydro Flask with stickers that brought more exciting elements to just a normal water bottle.
This is truly where the obsession with water bottles started, with the constant need for online validation and the idea that if you got a cool color, you would have an elevated status. I am still stuck in my Hydroflask phase because it is a staple water bottle that gets the job done. I don’t need to drop another $35 to buy the same water bottle and the only change being that the logo reads Stanley.
The Stanley cups have had the most popularity recently because of the spread over all social media platforms. The funny thing is that they are probably the least practical out of them all. The original Stanely has a cap that leaks, with a straw that will spill out all of its contents in seconds. One wrong move and all your water will be gone. The only plus is that you feel pretty cool holding it, but that’s it.
The newest addition to the cabinet of pointless bottles is the Owala. Out of all the options, I have to admit that Owalas have the most character, because of the strange, yet fun color combos and the duel drinking methods, a straw and a normal drinking hole combined into one. This site constantly drops new color combos that teenagers look forward to. What do they look forward to? Spending more money on the same water bottle that they already own.
People need to start to realize that water bottles don’t need to be a trend, they are simply a vessel for staying hydrated. If you own a working water bottle, you don’t need to buy a new one just because others have it. Save your bank accounts and stick with a bottle for more than a month.
