Junior Lillian Scott scored the 1,000th point of her varsity basketball career Feb. 4. Scott is the fourth member of the 1,000-point club. Scott accomplished this achievement on WHS’ home court as both the boys and girls varsity teams, family and friends cheered her on during the girls’ game against Rahway.
Said Scott: “During the Rahway game, everyone was passing me the ball and giving up shots so I could score. Throughout my career, everyone has played unselfishly, and this helped me be able to reach 1,000 points.
Co-Captain Morgan Maloney said that Scott’s accomplishment “was not only a testament to her great skill as a basketball player, but also her unmatched work ethic on and off the court.” Maloney also said that Scott is an inspirational player and a wonderful friend from whom the team can all learn.
Scott has played both varsity soccer and basketball since freshman year. As of now Scott is the only player on the team in the 1,000-point club, although teammate junior Jacqueline Knapp is roughly 40 points shy, according to nj.com. Said Knapp: “I admire [Scott’s] hard work and dedication to every sport she plays. She has a great work ethic and a great attitude towards everything. She [is] also very caring toward her teammates and can make everyone smile.”
Said Athletic Director Sandy Mamary: “It’s too simple to say Lil is a great kid and fantastic athlete. She is a team player first and indivual second. Lil has fun on the court and competes with a passion that exemplifies her work ethic.”
Although Scott says that this achievement was one of her goals, she said that she tried not to focus on it too much because she didn’t want it to interfere with the team’s other goals or her focus during the game.
Said Scott: “I would really like to win a county championship either this year or next year. Scoring a lot of points is great, but it pales in comparison to a championship trophy that I can share with my teammates.”
