Through perseverance and determination, Westfield’s Lady Blue Devils defeated Summit 3–2 at ALJ in the semifinal round on Oct. 27 in overtime.
“I thought we played amazing especially for the change in lineup after I got injured,” said Kenny.
The Lady Blue Devils remained on Summit’s side of the field for much of the first half, during which senior Emily McBain scored the first goal. However, Summit scored just minutes later, tying up the game as the half came to an end.
Said senior Tri-Captain Catherine Kerr, “[We] needed to possess more and connect our attacking midfielders and forwards more.”
WHS played just as strong in the second half. Said Kerr, “We moved the ball well and had creative attacks.”
WHS scored once more, but the goal was called because a player came into contact with the Summit goalie, who had possession of the ball.
With only three minutes left in the game, Junior Gianna DeVito scored a goal, bringing the score to 2–1.
Sophomore Kiera Loftus saved consecutive attempts at goal; however, with only one minute remaining in the game, Summit was awarded a penalty kick. Summit capitalized on this opportunity, and the regulation ended in a tie, 2–2.
The game went into overtime, and within five minutes, sophomore Lillian Scott scored the winning goal, leading WHS to a victory with a final score of 3–2, and extending their record to 13–1.
“We fought so hard and completely deserved that win,” said senior Tri-Captain Caroline Greenspan.
The Lady Blue Devils will play against Scotch Plains in the county finals Saturday at Kean University.
Said sophomore Kiera Loftus, “Going into overtime, I just wanted us to finish strong and send Summit home.”
