Football Burns Bridgewater-Raritan

By Katie DeMasi
Despite the blustery fall weather, bundled-up fans dressed in white traveled the distance to watch the WHS Blue Devils beat Bridgewater-Raritan, 22-7, under the lights last Friday night. After a 19-13 loss last year, the Blue Devils redeemed themselves and displayed a smart offense, a ruthless and new uniforms.
The Blue Devil offense started off the game with a drive that ended with a 27-yard field goal by senior kicker Jon Gribbin giving Westfield a 3-0 lead.

Less than a minute after the field goal, Quad-Captain James O’Rourke intercepted a pass at the 21-yard line and ran down the field for a touchdown. O’Rourke, who plays offense and defense, said: “I knew the type of routes they liked to run out of the formation they were in. I read the quarterback’s eyes and jumped the route.”

Gribbin, later taken out of the game after suffering from a concussion, made the extra point. The score at the end of the quarter was 10-0.

Early into the second quarter, senior Quarterback Nate Mitchell connected with Quad-Captain Pete Ondi on a screen pass for a 65-yard touchdown, the offensive touchdown of the game, increasing WHS’s lead to 16-0. “The timing was perfect and the line did a good job of getting out in the open field…[Ondi] did a great job getting into the endzone,” said Mitchell.

With less than two minutes left in the half, Bridgewater managed to get through the Blue Devil defense resulting in a 3-yard touchdown pass and extra point. Mitchell then threw a 39-yard pass to Ondi to the 20-yard line, but they were unable to capitalize, ending the half 16-7

The second half of the game was dominated by the Blue Devil defense. Head coach James DeSarno said: “I felt our defense set the tempo of the game. The [defensive line] was very physical against the run and made it hard for [Bridgewater] to get in sync passing the ball.” The score remained 16-7.

Early in the fourth quarter, a pass intended for Ondi was intercepted close to Westfield’s end zone, but 10 seconds later, O’Rourke had a 15-yard interception return for his second touchdown of the game. WHS failed to complete the two-point conversion attempt, making the final score 22-7. Desarno said; “[O’Rourke has great instincts for the ball. Any ball in his zone had a chance to be intercepted.”Westfield’s played Watchung Hill Sept. 22 and won 21-0.
