Tourists pin D.C. on their travel maps
Sharon & Michael Medeiros – Swansea, MA
“I think D.C. is awesome; it’s a very vibrant city. I’m a little disappointed that the cherry blossoms aren’t out in bloom because that is the reason we picked this week. We try to travel all the time. We’ve been to San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, New Orleans. We used to ski all the time up in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. Our favorite city in the U.S. would probably be San Francisco. We’ve seen probably everything in D.C. so far except the [Natural History] museum and the African American museum. We’ll be going into the Library of Congress later this week and that will probably cover every major place to see here. The [Arlington National] Cemetery was very moving and the art sculpture gallery was also really cool.”
Daimir King – Philadelphia
“I am here on a field trip with the rest of my school. We came to tour around the city and see all the monuments. I just visited the Museum of Natural History. All the history and sights here are awesome, and I’ve never been here before, so it’s cool to be able to see American monuments and culture all in one place here.”
Peter – Toronto & Mariyah – California
“We came here as a quick little stop from our honeymoon in South Africa and wanted to see all the sights. We love the calm, open vibe and seeing all the monuments here. You constantly see them on TV and in movies, so it’s crazy to see them in real life. We hope to visit again soon because this is such an amazing city that embodies American culture and patriotism.”
Larry Davis – Kansas City, KS
“I love D.C. and this is my first time in the Newseum. It’s very nice, I like it a lot. We’ve been all over, my wife and I: Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand. My favorite city in the U.S. would be Kansas City—that’s my home. I carry my camera with me every place I go.”
Debbie Keith – Yorktown, VA
“My favorite place [in D.C.] depends on what my mood is. Whenever I come, though, I always go to Arlington Cemetery. It has a special place in my heart; it’s something very special to do. I love the history of everything here. I like to travel all the time, and I’ve lived in 35 different states and overseas for several years. I’ve lived in Canada, Mexico, Belgium, Germany, Korea, the Philippines. I’m pretty much a world traveler.
I moved all the time growing up with my dad laying natural gas lines and his jobs always getting moved. Then, with my husband going into the Air Force, I got to see a ton of the world with where he was stationed. And I love taking pictures; I’ve even sold some. I do some professional work, but I mostly do it for my own enjoyment.”
Yuwei Pei – Nanjing, China
“I am currently studying in Philadelphia and wanted to come visit D.C. over spring break since I have never been here before. There are so many perfect spots to take pictures of the scenery and monuments. American culture is so much different than Chinese culture, so I love exploring it here at the capital. The weather is also a lot nicer here than in China, so it is easier to sightsee and tour around the city.”
