Food on the move

WASHINGTON—A meal on wheels is a great attraction for the busy workaholics of Washington, D.C. It’s a quick and delicious alternative to the fast food chains. As tourists, we sampled food from a few of the mobile restaurants parked on the street of Farragut Square.

First we stopped at Astro Donuts and Fried Chicken for their classic chicken fingers with a vanilla donut for dessert. The chicken was cut into strips of about eight pieces and it came with the sauce of your choice. We chose their homemade ranch dressing to go with it. The chicken was crispy and, paired with the ranch, it was the perfect combo. Their ranch dressing had a little spice to it, which made it different from the typical bottled dressing. After quickly devouring the chicken fingers, we moved on to our dessert. This donut definitely beats Dunkin’ Donuts and even Krispy Kreme. It was soft, fluffy and not dry like some donuts are. It was sweet, but the donut could have used a little more of the glaze on top.

Next we went to DC Slices for a slice of cheese pizza. The pizza was fresh out of the oven so our mouths did get a little burnt, but it was worth it. It had the perfect combination of sauce and cheese. It didn’t taste like a fast food slice; instead, despite being served from a food truck, it tasted like something right out of an Italian restaurant.

The last truck we tried was Tacos Matadors where we got a chicken, cheese and rice quesadilla, served with a side of their amazing homemade tortilla chips with salsa, sour cream and guacamole. The quesadilla was cut into three slices, which was a a great size.

As a nation we seek instant satisfaction even though we are presented with such little time. Due to hunger and time constraints in D.C., the success of food trucks continues to skyrocket. In addition, food trucks offer such diverse food. Although food trucks may be placed in the fast food category, people should not underestimate how delicious and convenient they really are.
