Girls lax claims first state title

The 15th-seeded WHS girls lacrosse team pulled off a huge upset over 5th-seeded Bridgewater-Raritan on May 24, beating the Panthers 10-4 in Bridgewater to take home the North 2, Group 4 state sectional title.

After sustaining many injuries this season, the lacrosse team worked together to make history by bringing home their first ever sectional title.

“I am so proud of them,” Head Coach Abby Cohn said. “Their dedication and passion for the sport of lacrosse is evident throughout every single day, whether it is at practice or on a game day.”

On Tuesday afternoon, the girls fell to top-seeded Ridgewood 17-2 in the Group 4 semi-final game in Warren Hills.

Although their season has come to an end, it was filled with spectacular accomplishments, including junior Olivia Shields netting her 100th career point, junior Carlee Swanson getting her 300th career save, and senior Natalie Bond being picked to represent WHS as a Union County Scholar Athlete.

With a lot of talent returning next year, the girls lacrosse team looks to remain dominant.

Baseball powers to state title game

The top-seeded WHS baseball team defeated fourth-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood in the North 2, Group 4 semifinals Tuesday afternoon in Westfield. This win was a culmination of the hard work that these boys have put in throughout the season.

The seniors, especially, have worked extremely hard this season and have been recognized for their great efforts.

Seniors Christopher Wagner and Cory Hiltz were invited to play in the state Senior All-Star Game.

“The 2018 Westfield baseball team is senior-laden with outstanding leadership,” said Head Coach Bob Brewster, “and they are very focused to end the season on a high note.”

The team will face second- seeded Millburn today at 4 p.m. in Westfield for a chance to win a state sectional title
