DJ Earworm recaps the decade in mashup
On Nov. 19, DJ Earworm released the “Decade of Pop” mashup featuring 100 pop songs from this decade in just a three-minute clip. From the moment I opened up the mashup on YouTube, I got chills.
Hearing the words “It goes on and on and on…” from the song “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz instantly brought me back to my childhood. I can vividly remember playing that song on repeat on my digital MP3 player.
Featuring glimpses of top tracks from 2010 to 2019, I heard songs that I forgot even existed such as “Some Nights” by Fun. and “Airplanes” by B.o.B ft Hayley Williams. (I bet you forgot about those songs too!)
The time and effort DJ Earworm put into this production is unreal. It’s insane to see how he used around six phrases from each song, but when put together in the chorus, they all sound like perfect sentences.
Along with the music, DJ Earworm incorporated snippets of each music video bringing back a nostalgic feeling. The DJ even created a one-minute sound for TikTok users which has been used by hundreds of thousands of people in the past week. It is not a shock to me that the video has gained recognition, as people love the idea of being nostalgic with the turn of the decade coming up.
The many different genres that were included were a surprise to me because I didn’t expect both slow and hype songs to all be under one beat. For example, Adele’s ballad “Someone Like You” was mashed up with the upbeat rap song “Trap Queen” by Fetty Wap. While it was an odd combination, it actually worked.
I loved the concept behind the song, and it’s definitely a song I will be dancing to at my New Year’s Eve celebration. I highly recommend listening to this mashup on repeat, as it is one that will surely bring back a lot of memories.
