As winter sports are coming to a close, there’s a lot that WHS should be celebrating. To start, for the first time in WHS history, both the boys and girls basketball teams won their Union County Conference Divisional Championships.

The girls team, led by Head Coach Liz McKeon, defeated the Cranford Cougars on Feb. 6 to secure the conference title. The game ended with a score of 63-46, and freshman Paige Gorzyca led all scorers with 14 points and 8 rebounds.

The boys team, led by Head Coach James McKeon, overcame the Scotch Plains Raiders to win their conference on Feb. 8 with a score of 59-51. Senior Captain Griffin Rooney led the team with 21 points and Senior Captain Jake Walsh was close behind with 17 points. Both of the teams will pursue county tournament games this week.

Wrestling is also wrapping up its season. On Feb. 14, the Blue Devils lost a close state sectional final match to Watchung Hills Regional High School, by a score of 37-28. Friday’s match showcased an impressive win from Senior Captain Luke Scanlan, and the team will now focus their energy on the last part of the season: the individual postseason.

The girls and boys swim teams also had extraordinary seasons, which came to an end after the state sectional finals meets on Feb. 13 and 14 respectively. The girls swim team had a tremendous season, with only two losses against two of the top-ranked teams in the state. Senior Captain Abby McKinney broke the 100-meter fly record with a time of 56.90. The girls also won the Union County Championship, and they ended the season ranked sixth in the state.

The boys swim team also competed in the state sectional finals meets last week and lost to Bridgewater-Raritan High School as well; however, they also had a great season. They won the Union County Championship and outscored second place finisher Summit High School by 98 points. They ended their season ranked eighth in the state and only lost two meets.

The girls track team has had incredible success recently, breaking various school records. The relay team of junior Isabel Boufarah, junior Katie Hamilton, junior Caroline Collins and Senior Captain Julia Csorba broke the distance medley record with a time of 12:03 and are currently ranked first in the state and fourth in the nation. Hamilton also broke the 400-meter record with a time of 59.18 and 800-meter with 2:15.4. Csorba broke the 200-meter with a time of 26.5.

The bowling team, led by Head Coach Ralph Corey, upset top-seeded Cranford on Jan. 30 with a score of 3-2 to take home the Union County Championship. The team wrapped up their season with a loss in the state tournament on Feb. 10.

Although the excitement of WHS winter sports is coming to an end, spring sports are right around the corner.
