Star Wars arrives once again: What audiences can expect
The return of the Star Wars franchise with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December 2015 rejuvenated a fan base in hibernation since the disappointing prequel films. It returned Star Wars to a sky-high level of expectations.
Two years later, the eighth installment of the series, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has inspired similar hysteria. Many questions remain unanswered following the events of the last movie, so what can we expect from the newest Star Wars film?
The title of the film alone creates many mysteries in itself. Does the “Last Jedi” coincide with Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill), or does it pertain to Rey (Daisy Ridley) and her discovery of the force?
Viewers are also wondering what the deal is with Rey and Luke’s confrontation on the planet Ahch-To. From watching the trailer, however, many fans can possibly expect a “master and apprentice”-type relationship between the two lightsaber-wielding heroes.
After analyzing the premiere trailer, moviegoers can expect a far more developed Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) regarding his motivations and relationship with the dark side. Could we see a ruthless effort to destroy the galaxy from Kylo Ren? Or will another side of Star Wars’ newest villain emerge?
Speaking of villains, one of the main points of interest surrounding the eighth film is the involvement of Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) after appearing sparingly in The Force Awakens. Fans are anxious to learn more about the mysterious Supreme Leader of the First Order in the upcoming film.
The major cliffhanger in the trailer shows Kylo Ren reaching for Rey’s hand when she says, “I need someone to show me my place in all this.”
Can we expect a possible dark side transformation of Rey? Will Rey retaliate to Kylo Ren’s attempt to absorb her into the dark side? Or are we being misled into thinking Rey could turn to the dark side much like Kylo did?
Of course, these are all assumptions and expectations. We won’t know exactly what will happen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi until we get to the theater. What we can expect, however, is another breathtaking Star Wars film that will leave the viewers awestruck and yearning for Episode IX.
