We understand that this year was difficult for so many people. Clearly, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed our world forever, with over one million deaths worldwide, over 308,000 deaths in the United States alone and 17 million cases nationally as of Hi’s Eye deadline. Along with these startling figures, millions of people have lost their jobs, livelihoods, family members and friends at the expense of a virus that just a year ago seemed insignificant. However, along with these tragedies, we have chosen to also acknowledge the positive aspects of this year in order to remind everyone that there is still some good in our rapidly-changing world. Check out the slideshow below to see all of the highlights.
Movements and People — Black Lives Matter: Undoubtedly, one of the most defining movements of this year, and this century as a whole, has been the Black Lives Matter movement. Reignited by the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers in July, activists from all over the country came together to protest police brutality against people like Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, and the Black community as a whole. One of the most prominent figures who helped to ignite political action within the Black community and beyond was Stacey Abrams, a former candidate for the gubernatorial election of Georgia. By encouraging Black voters in Georgia to vote, Abrams was able to mobilize the community that was responsible for flipping the state in Biden’s favor in the presidential election even though Georgia has historically been considered a Republican state. Though 2020 has been a monumental year for activism in support of the Black community, the events of this year have also made it clear that we as a nation still have a great deal of progress to make in terms of civil rights – progress which will hopefully be made in 2021.
