Bottom of the 10th, 1 out, 1-1 count. Senior first baseman and left-handed pitcher Dylan Berger is at the plate. A line-drive single to center field drives senior outfielder Jadon Edwards home, winning the game for Westfield. It seems fitting that this spectacular win was Varsity Baseball Head Coach Robert Brewster’s 652nd win, making him the winningest baseball coach in Union County history.

Since 1983, Brewster has been the skipper for the Blue Devils. In those 38 years, he has racked up some very impressive numbers. Along with the 652 wins, Brewster led Westfield to 11 county championship victories including three teams that made it all the way to the state championship game.

“I have always had the vision of a program and a good, competitive team year in and year out,” Brewster said. “I’ve got all these numbers, scores from as far back as they go for Westfield. But [this win] really sums it all up into three digits.” 

After winning his 652nd game, Brewster passed legendary Elizabeth Head Coach Ray Korn who retired in 2009. 

One of Brewster’s biggest rivals, but closest friend is Governor Livingston High School Baseball Head Coach Chris Roof. Roof said, “I have a great admiration for Coach Brew. Coaching is not easy, when you factor in the coach has done it for [38] years; it says a lot about the person he is. If this is his last year, I’m really going to miss competing against him year in and year out.”

Coach Brewster has not only gained the respect of other coaches but also his former players such as Anthony Iacoponi, class of 2019 graduate, former right-handed pitcher for the Blue Devils and a member of Brewster’s memorable 2019 sectional championship team. Iacoponi stated, “It was truly an honor to play for him and help him earn wins leading up to 652 so he and Westfield will be in Union County history forever.” 

Iacoponi finished by saying “he was a great coach to play for and nobody deserves the record more than Brew.”

Most recently, in the semi-final game of the Union County Tournament, Brewster and his team knocked off No. 2 ranked Cranford in a 2-1 battle. Westfield then lost Governor Livingston in the Union County Tournament championship game on Thursday. They look to regroup and move forward focusing on the state tournament starting next week.
