Hi’s Eye staffer wins award

Greta Frontero, a Hi’s Eye staff reporter and editor-in-chief, has been named the Garden State Scholastic Press Association’s 2018 New Jersey High School Journalist of the Year, which includes the Bernard Kilgore Memorial Scholarship of $5,000 to the college of her choice. She was honored last night in a ceremony in Hamilton, NJ.

“I’m really honored to have that title,” she said. “ I wasn’t really expecting it.”

Frontero wrote two stories this year on Juul-smoking among teens, and those stories provoked conversation on a town-wide level, while also raising interest beyond Westfield on a much larger scale as well. Frontero was also interviewed for a story on Juul-smoking, published in the April 8 edition of The New York Times. In the story, reporter Amos Barshad called Frontero’s Jan. 5 Hi’s Eye Juul story “a true gem of reportage.”

“The Juul story exposed something that is a big problem across the country that no one really talks about,” said fellow Hi’s Eye peer Bridget Hyland ’18, “which is why her article is so important.”
