Dive into fall’s festive treats

by Kate Helander
Apples, pumpkin and a little bit of spice: Hi’s Eye lets you in on the best hot spots to hit up for your fall fix.

Pumpkin Chai Latte-Mara’s Cafe & Bakery
If you love to cuddle up with a steaming latte like myself when the autumnal weather hits, but you find yourself torn between chai and pumpkin spice, you’re in luck! Mara’s Cafe & Bakery in Fanwood has a seasonal pumpkin chai latte. It packs in the classic chai flavor with just a hint of pumpkin, creating the ultimate fall drink!

Pumpkin Ice Cream- Scoops
Despite the chilly weather, pumpkin ice cream is a fall classic! Scoops in Scotch Plains is the spot to go to for a heaping bowl of this seasonal treat. With it’s pale orange color speckled with nutmeg, this limited-time flavor is a perfect combination of pumpkin flavor with just a little kick. If you want to get the full fall effect, then top off your bowl, cone or milkshake with whipped cream and graham cracker crumbles to have your treat taste just like pumpkin pie.

Apple Cobbler Cupcakes- Crumbs
If pumpkin isn’t your forte, then try an apple pie cupcake from Crumbs of Westfield. With Crumbs’ signature jumbo size, this cupcake is a treat that can be shared between two. The cupcake is based with an apple-cinnamon cake, and topped with vanilla cream-cheese frosting. Bite into this heavenly dessert and you will be surprised with a mouthful of apple preserves, completing the apple cobbler effect. It’s a great compromise before Thanksgiving when you might not have a cobbler around the house!

Pumpkin Soup- &Grain
If you don’t have a sweet tooth, but still want to embrace the pumpkin flavor this fall, head to &Grain in Garwood for a bowl of their creamy pumpkin soup. It’s thick with a bit of sweetness, and even has roasted pumpkin seeds in it, fully capturing the pumpkin flavor. While this soup isn’t completely savory, when paired with one of &Grain’s many freshly baked breads, this meal’s flavors balance themselves out. You won’t want to miss out on this fall food.
