Mets fan sees silver lining in Series

by Molly Bandelli
As the 2015 World Series came to a close at Citi Field on Nov. 1, I felt my heart break. Because I was born into a family of diehard Mets fans, it was unavoidable that I was going to become a Mets fan. This made watching the Mets’ loss to the Kansas City Royals much more difficult. It has been a long and painful journey to suffer with the team.  However, I could not have been happier that I was able to spend all of October watching the Mets play.
The 2015 season was full of amazing moments that resulted in a successful season, culminating with an NLCS win over the favored Chicago Cubs to go to the World Series for the first time since 2000. But despite the recent success, all focus is now shifted on to the 2016 season. So where do the Mets go from here? What will they need to do in order to assure another successful season?
As we enter the 2015 offseason, both Yoenis Cespedes and Daniel Murphy have become free agents. Cespedes brought the fire to the Mets’ offense, hitting 17 home runs in his three months on the team. But despite the outfielder’s strong season as a Met, he played mediocre in the postseason when it mattered most. On the other hand, Murphy went beyond his role as a solid offensive performer to lead the Mets in RBI and home runs in the postseason. The second baseman should be the top priority for the Mets given that he led the team in the postseason while Cespedes shrank from the moment and will likely cost significantly more.
The Mets’  elite starting rotation will continue to get stronger with the return of Zack Wheeler. He will join the powerhouse rotation of Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz.  Expectations are high for Wheeler, given his status as a former top pitching prospect.
With a strong and now experienced pitching rotation in addition to a stronger offense, there is no doubt that the Mets should be just as amazing next year as they were in 2015.
