Boys golf drives it home

The boys golf team was triumphant over Jonathan Dayton High School on April 23, defeating them by 65 strokes at Ashbrook Country Club in Scotch Plains.
Freshman Sean Taylor, sophomores Bear Mooney and Jack Hall and junior Jake Tooley shot a total combined score of 164, with 42, 38, 40, 43 each, respectively.
Although the 30 mph winds and scattering rain presented a challenge, the four players were able to overcome the harsh conditions and prevailed throughout the match, according to Tooley.
According to Coach Ryan Daly, Mooney and Hall had successful rounds because they were able to shoot below their averages. He also noted that Tooley stood out because it was his first varsity match, and he came through for the team under pressure.
Tooley said: “I was happy that my score contributed toward the match and that I was able to help my team get the win ….We were proud of how we played and how we were able to beat Dayton.”
Daly added: “The team performed well. We stuck to our game plan and were able to persevere through the windy and cold conditions. The boys have also improved, but still have a lot of work to do on their games.”
Tooley said: “What made it the most difficult that day was the cold weather and insane amount of wind, as well as some rain here and there. Overall, it was a tough match, but I couldn’t be happier from the results.”
According to Daly, the golf team’s goals are to win the tournaments at the conference and county levels and to qualify for the Tournament of Champions as a team.
Additionally, the team’s ultimate goal is to compete with the top golf programs in the state and win a state championship.
Boys golf will compete in the boys varsity NJSIAA Sectional Championship next Tuesday at Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster at 8 a.m. They will meet SPF next Wednesday at Shackamaxon Country Club in Scotch Plains. at 3:15 p.m.
