Weisse represents U.S. in lax

By Melanie Snyder
Senior Mallory Weisse, the WHS girls lacrosse team goalie, has recently become a member of the U19 United States girls lacrosse team.
ver the summer, 800 girls from around the country tried out for a position on the team and a chance to represent their country, according to Weisse. The tryout process was a rigorous one. “It was definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I was playing against the best players in the country,” said Weisse.

She added, “The most challenging aspect was staying mentally focused. You had to look your best even when you felt your worst.”

In the end, her hard work was rewarded. Twenty-five girls made the training team, and eighteen earned a position on the final roster. Weisse earned one of those coveted positions.

“The feeling is indescribable,” Weisse said. “I can’t even explain how it feels wearing red, white and blue across your chest, and hearing the national anthem play for you.”

Weisse attributes much of her interest and success on the field to her family. She said, “I always wanted to play on a team with [my older sister]. My father was coach of the youth lacrosse program when I was in third grade and had me jump in goal at one of their games.”

Girls Varsity Lacrosse Head Coach Sam Warner said of Weisse’s achievements, “As a coach, you could not ask for anything more than a player willing to put the success of the entire team on her shoulders.”

Senior Alyssa Cox plays on defense alongside Weisse. She commented, “I am so proud of Mallory for making the US U19 lacrosse team, because she worked so hard for it.”

The national team is on its way to defend gold in Edinburgh, Scotland this summer.

Weisse will then continue her lacrosse career at Northwestern University this fall. Weisse said, “I went into lacrosse for fun, and I think that is what my mindset has been throughout my experience.”
