Fall service energized

The food drive sponsored by the SGA started Nov. 11 and will last through Nov. 25 to collect items for the food pantry at the Holy Trinity Parish. According to SGA Vice President Katie Brown, the homeroom that brings in the most cans will receive a bagel breakfast sponsored by the SGA.

Said Brown, “Holy Trinity Parish’s Food Bank runs all year long, but around Thanksgiving is the most needed time for donations.”

She added: “It is an important event for the Student Government because it is a time for us to help out the community at large as opposed to just programs within WHS. It is also important because the student body can get involved in a very simple but influential way.”

Added SGA President Chris Romano: “By encouraging the student body to give food to those in need, especially around …Thanksgiving, the school is promoting an attitude of general welfare and charity, which is important to every town.”

He added, “By uniting the entire school under one common goal…the camaraderie of the student body is increased because although there’s competition between homerooms, we’re, in essence, all working together.”

Additionally, the Community Service Club is holding its ninth annual coat drive, which runs through Nov. 20. Donations benefit those in need living in New York City, Newark and Irvington, also through the Bridges outreach program.  The club averages around 300 coats a year, according to Club Adviser Mr. Warren Hynes. There is a drop-off bag in each homeroom and a box in the main entrance foyer.

The club also participates in year-round efforts, such as a toiletry drive that benefits the Bridges Outreach program, to allow more opportunities to give.
