Brewing joe for G.I. Joes

by Caitlyn Tierney
Social Studies Teacher Mr. Thomas Hornish’s fundraiser “Cup of Joe for G.I. Joe” opened for donations on Tuesday. The fundraiser is run by the Support the Troops Club; donations and coffee will be sent overseas to Assistant Principal Dr. Derrick Nelson’s company in Qatar
According to Hornish, the fundraiser developed because of a comment by WHS alum Captain Dan McGrory, who pilots Black Hawk helicopters in Afghanistan. In a letter to his family, McGrory mentioned that his soldiers had trouble finding a good cup of coffee while deployed in the Middle East. Hornish said he heard of the dilemma and decided to help.

“When I was in high school, at the height of the [Vietnam War,] you did not get that kind of support for the troops,” said Hornish. “This [support] is very gratifying to see.”

According to Hornish, if everything goes as planned, the project will raise approximately $1,000 and send 80-100 pounds of coffee.

The project raised over $300 on the first day, according to Hornish, which he said emphasizes the level of care WHS shows for the military.

Said Hornish, “If every person in WHS gives a dollar or even 50 cents, we can raise $1,000 this week.”
