The first quarter of Tuesday’s game started off slow, with both teams playing hard but neither able to score.

With four minutes remaining in the first quarter, junior Lillian Scott passed to senior Co-Captain Carly Friedman who scored, giving WHS the lead at 4–2. Scott followed the play with a three-pointer off of an inbound pass, extending WHS’ lead.

WHS finished strong in the last 30 seconds of the quarter, when Scott sank both her foul shots and junior Jacqueline Knapp got a break up the court and scored, leading at the end of the quarter at 11–5.

In the second quarter, UC fought back, tying the score at 13–13 with three minutes remaining, and ultimately wrapping up the half down 17–15.

In the second half, WHS started to pull away, capitalizing on its opportunities from turnovers and rebounds. Scott’s break down the court and assist to sophomore Olivia Luzzi brought the score to 32–23 to end the quarter.

Said senior Co-Captain Morgan Maloney, “For the first time all season, we were down at the half, and it showed a lot about the character of our team that we immediately increased the lead in the first few minutes of the third quarter.”

The Blue Devils widened their lead with each play, ending the game with a 14-point lead.

Said Assistant Coach Elizabeth McKeon, “They got into their game in the second half, and they really closed it out.”

Said Marino: “We know what we have as a team. We work hard; we have great skilled players, and it was a matter of time before we were going to break [UC] down.”
