Star Wars arrives once again: Why we care so much about it

Over the past 40 years, sci-fi fans have adored the Star Wars franchise, which leaves viewers on the edge of their seats with every new movie. With the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi today, fans are very excited to head to the theaters to see what the new movie has in store for the audience. But why exactly do people continue to care so much about Star Wars after all these years?

According to sophomore Jonny Givelber, the movies have a captivating story that sticks with people for the rest of their lives. “Star Wars is an instant classic because of its unique set of heroes and villains,” said Givelber. “It also makes you feel like you are actually in the movie.”
Junior Cooper Brennan feels similarly to Givelber, saying that the movies tell a thrilling, one-of-a-kind story in which, despite overwhelming odds, good triumphs over evil in a world of infinite possibilities. Said Brennan: “Our parents loved the first trilogy, as they were our age when it was released. Now with more Star Wars movies coming out, our parents have exposed our generation to the movies’ thrilling enjoyment that they felt as kids.”
Additionally, since all the movies connect to each other by telling a continuing story, fans always enter the next movie curious about how the plot will unfold and influence the characters’ adventures.
Prior to 1977 when the original Star Wars film came out, there was no other space movie that told such a thrilling tale in an unpredictable, distant universe. Today, people still recognize it as the space movie. The fact that everyone recognizes “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” demonstrates the effect that Star Wars has on people across the world.
Star Wars brings you into a world where virtually anything is possible,” said senior Josh Stryker. “Between all of the fantastic possibilities, such as the guild of warriors who have amazing mind-control powers and spaceships that can go across the galaxy at lightspeed, who wouldn’t want to see these movies?”
