How to help disaster victims

If you’re like me, you feel helpless during times of natural disasters. Between the storms that have hit Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, there is nothing more I want to do than help. But what is the best way to support those in need?
Charitynavigator.org provides helpful tips on who to trust when donating. Here are some tips from the site:
• Do your research. If you are unsure about the authenticity of a charity, then write the name down and do your research before donating. Charity Navigator gives rankings to every charity.
• Do not send supplies. Keep in mind that due to mass destruction the victims are unable to distribute your donations, let alone receive them for some time. Your intentions are good, but instead put a garage sale together and use the money you make to donate.
• Do not expect immediate results from your donations. You must be patient
